Monte Vista Projects is pleased to present Adelino’s Auto Clinic, a group exhibition curated by Andrew Barsoum.
Drawing on his origins in Riverside, CA by way of Cairo, Egypt, Barsoum identifies car culture as both a rally point for the American zeitgeist and an opportunity for self expression. From Lowriders to Tafheet (Saudi stunt drifting), car culture has connected the world via the highways of industrial globalization to ubiquitous saturation. Honing in on this intersection of exchange between Chicano and SWANA (Southwest Asian/North African) communities in Southern California, Barsoum invites visitors to reimagine the mechanic shop waiting room as a modern salon, a place for exchange among artists engaged in the overlap between cultural and automotive representation. Each artist offers an interpretation of the automobile beyond its utilitarian functions, emphasizing the technology instead as vehicles for discourse and reverie.
