Socialworks: Robby Herbst

An earnest attempt to visualize some of the affective qualities of a welfare state, (sharing burdens, empathy, solidarity) as visualized in collage, wood sculpture, and a performance titled Bearing The Weight Of Others, (where a group of people allow themselves to be stepped upon).

The performance of Bearing the Weight Of Others took place at Monte Vista April 23rd, 2011.

Robby Herbst is an interdisciplinarian. Broadly he’s interested in socio-political formations; behavioral architecture, languages of dissent and counter cultures. Journeys in these fields have lead him to visual art, writing, group work, independent media, public theory and organizing.

He is an instigator of the Llano Del Rio Collective  (www.ldrg.wordpress.com). Llano Del Rio recently released the guide Scores For the City, which explores the affect of public performances in Los Angeles and their effects on the social imagination of this urban area. He is a founder and former editor of the Journal of Aesthetics & Protest. Other collaborations of note include The October Surprise and an unnamed formation that promoted psychedelic lightshows as art. In fall and winter of 2011 he will be directing a series of public performances and an exhibition with the Dumbo Art Center in New York City. That project explores the social architecture of class structure through an acrobatics demonstration.

He has contributed to Alan Kaprow: Art As Life, Museum of Contemporary Art, LA; the 2008 California Biennial; Democracy in America: The National Campaign, Creative Time 2008; Fine Print: Alternative Media, P.S.1, New York. Additionally he's shown work with Southern Exposure (SF), Hyde Park Art Center (Chicago), The Art Gallery of Knoxville (TN), LACE (LA), NGBK, (Berlin), David Patton Los Angeles and Machine Project (LA).
